November 18 from 2022 - 11: 44

The Valencian bibliophile and writer, Manuel Bas Carbonell, who founded the Jerónima Galés Valencian Bibliographic Society in 2002, owned one of the best private libraries in the Valencian Community in Xàbia. Now, his personal archive has been ceded by his widow, María Teresa Martín Bas, to the Nicolás Primitivo Valencian Library.

The archive is made up of 241 folders that collect the cultural testimony of the last 60 years in the Valencian Community. It houses documentation of a lifetime dedicated to Valencian culture and joins the private library, with more than 25.000 books, acquired by the Generalitat in 2000 and which is already part of the Valencian Library collection.

Manuel Bas Carbonell (1942-2020) combined his collecting work with a committed dedication to culture, leaving important exhibitions, congresses and seminars for history. He was a member and vice president of the Valencian Council of Culture between 1995 and 2002.

As founder of the Valencian Bibliographic Society, Jerónima Galés sponsored various publications and activities related to books and had an outstanding participation in the founding of the Printing Museum in the Puig de Santa Maria monastery.

He is the author of an extensive list of articles in the press on the Valencian book, as well as innumerable books related to Valencian culture: 'Roque Chabás. The historian of the Renaissance' (1995), 'Valencian Travelers (2003th-2006th centuries)' (2017), 'Don Quixote of Valencia' (XNUMX) and 'Passion for books. Memoirs of a bibliophile' (XNUMX).

His cultural and professional work was recognized with awards such as the Gold Medal for Merit at Work and the High Distinction of the Generalitat.

The donation of the Manuel Bas Carbonell archive is considered to be of great interest for the cultural heritage of the Generalitat and the people of Valencia. The Valencian Library will put all the necessary means to guarantee the conservation, organization, operation and dissemination of the given material, adopting the appropriate measures to guarantee its integrity.
