12 September 2018 - 07: 51

David Ferrer, in his tennis club, the Jávea Tennis Club, face to face on the terrace of the restaurant, has made the most sincere interview to Xàbia.com after announcing his retirement from professional tennis in the next year.

The first thing that David wants to clarify is that he has not yet left tennis, he just announced, a few weeks ago, that he will no longer play a Great Slam. "Next year I will finish in Barcelona and Madrid and before that I will play the tournaments in Auckland, Buenos Aires and Acapulco and with Garbiñe Muguruza, which I have never played"commented Ferrer.

When it comes to taking stock, that of Xàbia, stays with his entire career, there have been special moments in his career, after 17 years of professional. 7 was in the Top Ten years and "Now I look back and I'm proud of what I got".

David clarified a little legend that accompanies him since its inception and said that, "It is not true that in my beginnings my father took me to the work because he broke the rackets. This is something that mixed with my brother. When you have 16 years you always have doubts and you start to mature little by little, with 14 and 15 years it was one of the best in Spain and when you go to the senior stage and do not win the games you get doubts. My career, fortunately, has evolved as a tennis player and I have been able to improve mentally and it is true that with 21 years I was breaking rackets and I did not behave as I played, but life is like that and it has been a great triumph to see how I started and how I am finishing".

My brother Javier is the mirror where I looked

Since he started playing he has always looked in the mirror of his brother, Javier and noted that "Although there are people who do not know, Javier was champion of Spain with 14 years and having three years less was the one who opened the way for me, you were better or worse. My brother decided to take the path of training tennis players and he has helped me a lot so that he could reach where I have arrived".

On the values to be instilled in young people in sports, David said that "you have to respect the rival, be correct, be comxicotetive and not be a cheat and most importantly, the education you can have from your parents".

The injuries force him to stop professional tennis

The decision to leave professional tennis has been for age and physique, "and not for the birth of my son"said Ferrer. The one from Xàbia commented that "I have had problems in the Achilles tendon, it is chronic, I can not play more than two games. It was a decision I made two months ago and I'm happy, because I'm ready to have taken it. This will allow me to spend more time in Xàbia, which is something that fills me up a lot".

We ask David: Is being number two in Spain so many years has it motivated you? Ferru replied "Rafa Nadal has helped me a lot to evolve, just like in his day Juan Carlos Ferrero, they have made me a better tennis player. I look at the positive part and thanks to Rafa and Roger I have had ambition to get what I have".

He confesses that he has no doubts in what has been his greatest sporting joy, "was to win the 1000 Master of Paris-Bercy and my best match the Davis Cup final in Prague against Thomas Berdych in the 2012"He acknowledges that that year both in the aspect of the game, as well as physically and mentally, he was the best of his career.

Sighs for living in Xàbia

The injuries have punished him but fortunately they have not been serious, now he recovers from the last one in the match against Rafa Nadal. He is well and announces that in fifteen days he will play a game in Monterrey, which he will attend as a guest and the preseason in November will be held in Xàbia with which he will close this year.

On the format of the new Davis Cup, Ferrer states that, "I like the new format when playing in a week, you can prepare better, you just need to adjust the calendar. I think it's an advance and it's going to evolve for good".

Ferrer recognizes that he has no plans for his future, he simply wants to finish the 2019 in the best possible way and rest with his family. His goal is to live in Xàbia and rest, as he has had a stressful life with so much pressure and especially full of travel.

On his last game of Great Slam on the track Arthur Ashe comments that "it was a gift to play against Nadal and I was playing well, I got a break in the second set, but I had a small break that forced me to retire. I had never retired before in a Grand Slam clash"The xabiero admires Nadal for the values he transmits and for the way he behaves and would have liked to play against Sergi Bruguera, André Agassi and Jhon McEnroe.

Thanks to his family

Now that he is about to finish his professional career he remembers his parents and his family, who have been those who have been by his side at all times. Another memory is for Paco Fogués, who since 18 years has been linked to his career, he has many people in mind for his gratitude and the Jávea Tennis Club and evidently for Mariano Peinado, who was his first coach.

The interview with David Ferrer is ending and the last question is very personal and familiar, how do you handle changing Leo's diapers? Between smiles he tells us that "It costs and I myself have been surprised at how I'm taking it".

David Ferrer, a number one on the track and a simple and close person out of it, an illustrious xabiero that wherever he goes, always presumes to be xabiero.
