Cs Xàbia asks the City Council to enable pedestrian crossings in the Saladar area

23 2021 April - 12: 51

The spokesman for the municipal group Cs Xàbia, Enrique Escrivá, has presented an urgent motion to be debated in the next plenary session to be held on Monday, April 26, demanding that the Javea Town Hall to get involved and act to alleviate the road safety problems that neighbors and merchants in the Saladar area have repeatedly denounced, given the serious danger that pedestrians in the area pose, “having to risk their lives to cross into the other side of the road without having a single pedestrian crossing, or having to move along the shoulder as there is no sidewalk on one side of the road ”.

One road, the Portitxol highway, which Escrivá has pointed out, “supports a high density of traffic especially during the summer season, but we cannot forget the danger that neighbors and residents of the area are subjected to daily, as well as owners and users of the commercial center of Saladar, when forced to cross a road without a pedestrian crossing or having to walk along the hard shoulder ”. An area in which there is also a school and some schoolchildren from that center, located a few meters away, also have to walk along the shoulder of this road.

As for the orange mayor, he added that “it is difficult to understand that in a section with these characteristics there is not, at least, a part of sidewalk in the direction of Cabo la Nao; nor a pedestrian crossing after the roundabout
del Saladar or the Consum roundabout on Camí Cabanes, when, in addition, Escrivá continued, at both points, the lowering of the sidewalks and the central refuge are already prepared for pedestrian access and it is only a matter of painting and signal the zebra crossings ”.

A problem, which is part of the historical claims that those affected in the area have been making, and that have come to put this matter in the hands of the Síndic de Greuges. Some demands that Escrivá has collected and that
in his opinion, the Xàbia City Council can attend, at least in part, despite the fact that the road is owned by the Alicante Provincial Council, “since the City Council, as the Administration closest to the neighbors, through simple interventions, such as painting and signal the zebra crossings located after the Saladar and Consum roundabouts; o Enabling a part of the sidewalk in the green space, owned by the municipality, which is located between the entrance to Tosalet and the detour to the Guardia highway, would substantially improve the safety of pedestrians in the area, while improving the quality of life of the neighbors ”.
