Location and route

Les Coves Santes are on the cliff of Cabo de San Antonio. They are difficult to access because they are directly on the walls suspended over the sea. Here you have the track of Wikiloc that marks the route.

History

In the fourteenth century, the Hieronymite monks settled in isolated parts of the world, in search of solitude and tranquility to meet God. Around 1340, there was a movement in which numerous groups became hermits and dispersed through the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon in search of caves, mountains and other remote places. Here in Xàbia, twelve faithful retired to the so-called Coves Santes, under Cabo de San Antonio. Among these religious, a well-known figure stands out: Sister Catherine Bas. Born in Xàbia, she developed her religious devotion in this same place. His house was a cave higher than that of the rest of the hermits, also in Cabo de San Antonio, very difficult to access and which is still known as the cave of Sister Basota.

The Jeronimos had founded a monastery in Les Planes (name given to this area of Jávea in which the Montgo descends on a plain towards the sea), which was permanently attacked by the Berbers, who took them away as hostages. Finally, the order built another monastery in the interior lands, to stop suffering these attacks, and they "moved" to the Monestir of Sant Jeroni de Cotalba, in Alfahuir, eight kilometers from Gandía.
