Competences on the coast are shared by several administrations.
In the case of water quality control, a general directorate is in charge - the Hydraulic Resources and Water Quality Planning Service - dependent on the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition.
EPSAR, a public sanitation entity that manages the damaged submarine outfall in Arenal, also reports to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Both autonomous organizations have been carrying out analyzes for weeks in the area of the breakdown of the submarine outfall. The Xàbia City Council has also commissioned other complementary analyzes to carry out a more regular control of the quality of the water given the situation and the start of the bathing season.
They are analytical carried out according to the protocols and all are giving as a result that the water is suitable for bathing. The values are not always the same but there is agreement and they have always been within the parameters that allow the bath.
From Ecologists in Action they have made public the result of another third sample, taken without any type of guarantee (it is not known where the water is collected from, the amount or if the chain of custody to the laboratory meets the requirements) that gives values very high, something that does not fit in any way with all the other samples taken.
For weeks this group has been alarming the population with biased information and totally subjective assessments.
Administrations must offer legal certainty to people and therefore, decisions are made based on official reports and not on opinions or assumptions.
To date, the Xàbia City Council does not have any communication from Water Quality about the need to close the Arenal to the bathroom. Nor any real and contrasted data to do it unilaterally.
We regret statements such as those made by Compromís Xàbia, questioning the control and monitoring that three public administrations are carrying out, as well as the official protocols that ensure everyone's safety.
Especially when the Ministry of Agriculture as well as the direction of water quality and the management of EPSAR are the responsibility of his party, Compromís.
