Cala del Minister Jávea: history, views and location

January 28 from 2021 - 00: 00

La Minister Creek o Cala del Ministre de Jávea is located just at the end of the Beach First Muntanyar o Playa del Benissero or, we could say at the beginning of the Arenal Beach, just behind the Parador Nacional de Turismo de Jávea.

Next you have an index with all the points that we are going to deal with.

History

La Cala del Ministro gets its name from the chalet that is located there. A large building, located in a privileged place and that Franco gave to his former Minister of Finance between February 25, 1957 and July 7, 1965, Mariano Navarro Rubio. He received part of this land in 1959, appropriating Xàbia's historical heritage.

In the 80s, by decision of the Supreme Court, some sales of parcels made in the same way as this one, were declared void, considering that the lands were of maritime-terrestrial domain, except that of the family of Mariano Navarro Rubio.

At present and after several disputes between the public administration and the family heir to this land, which still maintain the concession for this section of the public coastline, the house and the plot itself remain very deteriorated.

Archaeological site

On the other hand, and within the history of this small cove is to be found at this point an archaeological site, which was fenced as property of the chalet. Part of the Roman site was destroyed when the chalet was built, another, the one that remained in the outer area, but forming part of the private plot, has deteriorated due to not being preserved.

In addition, this area has a special value because it has an important Roman site, which at the moment is located inside the plot of the Minister's House and which actually forms a natural pool in the sea.

Queen's Baths

From the cove itself, on the beach, you can see "Els Banys de la Reina" (Baños de la Reina), which are the remains of the commercial settlement that was used to make salted fish and that date back to the XNUMXst century BC. This fact shows the importance of the salting activity carried out by the Romans.

The discovery of these deposits excavated in the rock and communicated with the sea explains how the Romans carried out salting. They deposited the fish entrails with abundant salt to obtain the precious 'garum' (fish sauce consumed in ancient Rome, which was made from whole fish or from waste and fish entrails. This fish was mixed with salt and it was left to ferment naturally for months), which, packed in jars, was distributed throughout the empire.

Roman fish farm

Among the rough stone that characterizes this marvelous cove there are different rafts dug that show the existence of a fishing factory from Roman times that was in operation until the second century.

When the construction of the house began, the owners were unaware of the existence of the important historical heritage, so when the owners visited the works and observed the appearance it offered, they rightly suspected that it could be an old construction and ordered the suspension of the works. works. (This information can be expanded in the book The fishing factory of Punta de l'Arenal and other Roman remains of Jávea.

Relaxation place

The Cala del Ministro is entirely made of rough stone, it does not have a high occupancy although due to its small dimensions it always seems to be full. This small cove, from which you can see the vast expanse of Playa del Primer Muntanyar or Playa del Benissero, does not have any services. There is no maritime surveillance, wooden walkways and even fewer hammocks and umbrellas for users.

La Cala del Ministro does not have bars or restaurants around, the closest ones are the beach bars that extend along the Playa del Primer Muntanyar or the bars and restaurants of Playa del Arenal.

In this cove you can not practice any water sports as it is a very small and quite closed cove. People go to Cala del Minister to relax, sunbathe, cool off and disconnect with the sea as the only witness.

In addition, the waters of Cala del Minister are crystal clear and calm, so taking a bath, always with appropriate footwear, is most pleasant in this hidden little corner.

Location

As we have mentioned, this wonderful corner is behind the Parador Nacional. Specifically, it is the continuity of the Playa del Primer Montañar. Its exact location is Avenida del Mediterráneo, 231. The only way to access it is on foot, leaving the vehicle in the parking area of the Playa del Primer Montañar or in Playa del Arenal, since the Cala del Ministro or Baños de la Reina, as Google Maps places it, is at the junction between the two beaches.
