Amjasa celebrates Human Rights Day with a spot on the importance of water

10 December 2020 - 15: 59

Amjasa, together with the Spanish Association of Public Supply and Sanitation Operators (AEOPAS), celebrates Human Rights Day. This year, given the events suffered worldwide by the COVID-19 pandemic, the United Nations wanted to give a message of the opportunity offered by Human Rights: "Rebuild to improve." It points out that Human Rights should be a priority in the world, that it helps eradicate discrimination, inequalities, that makes a more participatory and supportive society, promoting a more sustainable development that avoids the consequences of profound climate change.

Taking advantage of this Human Rights Day, AMJASA and AEOPAS launch a spot that recalls the importance of water in the fulfillment of many of the Human Rights recognized by the United Nations Assembly, and especially points out that, from the public operators of supply and sanitation, it is understood that NOBODY CAN BE LEFT BEHIND.

The health crisis of COVID-19 and its dramatic social impact requires the maximum involvement of all levels of the Administration. The implementation of advanced measures that complement the efforts already being developed by many municipalities to try to guarantee that no user of the public water service is left behind is a priority. The Minimum Vital Supply (SMV) constitutes, in this case, an important economic and social commitment in these difficult times, but it has the vocation of permanence, consolidating itself as a new right of citizenship.

Hence, public operators responsible for water supply maintain a solid stance regarding the development of tools and mechanisms that prevent water poverty For economical reasons. The Vital Minimum Supply has been established, and financial support for water bills for families unable to cope with them is established in the regulations. In addition, work continues on a more open and transparent management model, where, through the OAX, social participation is becoming more common and with greater decision-making power.

Joining the SMV means that the supplying entity will guarantee the supply of minimum vital flows of 100 liters / person / day in homes at risk of social exclusion and / or energy poverty. This threshold of 100 liters covers the basic needs of the family unit, being recommended by organizations such as the World Health Organization. Furthermore, the limitation of the SMV to a maximum endowment relates the consideration of water as a human right with the environmental need to promote the responsible consumption of a scarce good such as water.
