El Javea Town Hall has awarded the Ulrike Wehr architecture studio, based in Xàbia, the drafting of the basic project to adapt the premises of the Cape San Antonio lighthouse. The contract is for a total of 14.278 euros and is intended to prepare the plans of the current state of the property and the project for the habilitation of two buildings for public use units, which as already advanced will serve to implement a Center for Interpretation of the Marine Reserve and Natural Park Montgó. The execution period is two and a half months.
With this first economic endowment, the City puts the project bases to give public use and make accessible one of the most unique buildings of the municipality and that 2015 was about to become a hotel. The local government rejected this from the first moment that the lighthouse was privatized and began the necessary negotiations to obtain ownership and promote a project to give it public use. At the same time, it sought the support of the Governing Board of the Montgó Natural Park so that the building would be a point of dissemination of the environmental wealth of the area and of awareness of the need for its protection.
Assignment of the building
At the beginning of this year, the Port Authority of Alicante officially ceded the use of the lighthouse civil building to the town of Xàbia and the Consistory went to work on the formula to reform it, making it visitable. The intention, as the mayor recalls, José Chulvi, is to make it a cultural and informative point of the Marine Reserve, following the model of Albir and open to the general public and especially to the school. Once the basic project is ready and the necessary investment is known to enable it, Xàbia will look for financial aid in other administrations.
Chulvi has pointed out that this project, in addition to highlighting the architectural and naval heritage of the population, is another example of the municipality's commitment to defending the public and environmental values.
