The Orfeón de Xàbia will offer its last concert tonight. A farewell performance "to 40 years of full dedication to music", pointed out the founder and creator of the Orfeón, Pepe Mayor, who added that after 40 years at the head of the entity, "the time has come for me to retire, I can no longer dedicate so much time to the Orfeón".
A difficult decision, but one that puts an end to the long history of this group, which began in 1979 when Pepe Mayor, together with some friends who liked to sing, formed the Orfeón de Xàbia.
Since then, the Orfeón has grown, reaching more than 50 members and performing in different events. Their concerts gave life to the cultural programming of both this town and other municipalities to which they were invited. The more than 30 people who have formed this group to date have shared long and good moments, "but just as the years have passed for the Orfeón, they have passed for us. Most of us are older people and since the pandemic, the formation has gone declining", indicated the president of the Orfeón, Teresa García.
García regrets that the definitive end of the Orfeón has come, "but although it was considered to look for a new director before the announcement of the retirement of Pepe Mayor, finally it was voted no. The majority stated that they were not going to continue, so it was unfeasible get on with so few people".
Now, the last song of the Orfeón can be heard tonight, at 21:00 p.m., in the Church of St. Bartholomew, offering an emotional farewell concert to all attendees.
